CANNING INDUSTRY AND LITOGRAPHY

A Indústria Conserveira constitui, desde a sua introdução em Setúbal, em finais do séc. XIX, uma das principais actividades económicas da zona.
No final dos anos 20, Setúbal era um dos principais portos produtores de conservas de peixe de Portugal. A Litografia foi inventada em finais do séc. XVIII por Alois Senefelder, tendo-se popularizado nos primeiros anos do século XIX.
Constitui, sem dúvida, um dos suportes mais importantes da indústria conserveira, pois permite a impressão da Folha-de-Flandres necessária à confecção das embalagens, as popularmente conhecidas “latas” de conserva. A introdução da litografia em Setúbal data do ano 1893.

The canning industry was, since it´s introduction in Setúbal by late 19th century, one of the main Portuguese economical activities. By late 1920's Setúbal was one of the main producers of fish comfit in Portugal.
The lithography was invented by Alois Senefelder, at the end of the 18th century and acquired popularity on the beginning of the 19th cent.
It is one of the most important supports of the canning industry, allowing the printing of tinfoil used in making the cans. It's introduction in Setúbal was in 1893.
